Thomas Käppler was born in Dresden in 1959. His musical training in singing and playing piano began at the age of 10 years as a choir boy in the Choir boy Institute of the Dresden Hofkirche.
From 1975 to 1981 the studied classical drums and timpani at the Carl Maria von Weber Academie in Dresden with Peter Sondermann and Konrad Müller. He has been a percussionist with the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden since 1980, and solotimpanist from 1985, and since the founding of the Chamberorchestra Virtuosi Saxoniae, Dresdner Kapellsolisten and the Dresdner Barockorchester. Thomas Käppler has been active in Concerts and CD recordings in the Ensemble and as solist. In 2005 he received the Fritz Busch Price from the Semperoper Dresden for instrumental music. Since the reconstruction of the Dresden Frauenkirche in 2005, Thomas Käppler has been playing in the Dresden Frauenkirche Ensemble.
