Matthias Racz is a renowned bassoonist currently playing as the principal bassoonist for the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich under Paavo Järvi and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra under Riccardo Chailly. He is also Professor of Bassoon at the Zurich University of the Arts.
Matthias began his musical education at the age of six on the piano and later added the bassoon.Early in his career, Matthias made a name for himself by participating in numerous competitions and achieving outstanding results. For example, he won 3rd prize at the International Bayreuth Music Competition "Pacem in terris" (2000), 1st prize at the International Music Competition "Prague Spring" (2002) and in the same year he won the International Music Competition of the ARD in Munich. Matthias made his debut as a soloist at the age of 15 with the Cologne Chamber Orchestra in the television production "Young Artists on the Podium". Since then, he has given many more concerts with various orchestras, including the Norddeutsche Philharmonie, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Symphony Orchestra and the Taipei Symphony Orchestra. His numerous CD productions, including his latest with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, document his artistic achievements.
Matthias gave his first international master class for bassoon at the age of 24 and has since led many master classes around the world. He is also Artistic Director for Bassoon at "The Muri Competition" in Muri, Switzerland.
