Domenico Orlando was born in Salerno in 1979, he was just 6 when he began studying piano and discovered a true passion for music.
After a few years, he decided to dedicate himself entirely to the instrument that gave him his actual fame, the oboe. At the age of 17, under the guidance of Maestro Alfonso Smaldonehe he graduated with top marks and honours at the Salerno’s Conservatory of Music .
He continued his oboe studies with Luca Vignali in Rome and with Maurice Bourgue in Geneva, where he received, among others, the Diplôme de soliste avec distinction.
In parallel to his studies, he entered several prestigious national and international competitions, for example the Concorso Nazionale G. Tomassini di Petritoli, in which, in 1997, he won the 2ndPrize (1st Prize was not assigned) as well as the Special Jury Prize. In October 2003, he won the 3rd Prize at the 7thTokyo International Oboe Competition.
He started working with several orchestras even before finishing his studies, playing as first oboe in the Santa Cecilia Youth Orchestra in Rome, under Maestro ‪Myung-Whun Chung, at the age of 18. Few years later, he became principal oboe in the San Gallen Symphony Orchestra, in Switzerland.
In January 2000 he started his collaboration with Bayerischerrundfunk Orchestra, under Maestro Lorin Maazel. In 2001, he won the position of principal oboe at the Teatro Regio di Torino, where he remained until 2009. From 2009 he is the first oboe in Lipsia’s Gewandhausorchester.
As principal oboe, he has often been invited to collaborate with several orchestras, such as London Symphony, Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester (Hamburg), Bamberger Symphoniker, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra Santa Cecilia and Orchestra del Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, Orchestra Filarmonica ‪Arturo Toscanini in Parma, Orchestra da Camera del Maestro ‪Salvatore Accardo. This activity allows him to play regularly with the most important contemporary conductors, such as Nelsons, Chailly, Gergiev, Barenboim, Bychkov, Maazel, Fruhbeck de Burgos, Rostropovich, Ashkenazy, ‪Myung-Whun Chung, ‪Pappano, Harding, ‪Nagano, Accardo, Ticciati, Blomstedt, Norrington.

Among his solo concerts Strauss’s Concerto in D major for Oboe and Small Orchestra with the Teatro Regio’s Philarmoic Orchestra directed by M° Gianandrea Noseda in 2008 and the Sinfonia Concertante in B flat major by Joseph Haydn with the Gewandhausorchester directed by M° Omer Meir Wellber (2017) stand out over all.
Besides his performances as oboist, Domenico Orlando is trainer in masterclass in Italy, Great Britain, Spain and Japan.
